Eye Tales: Harriet's Grave
They enter the cemetery looking for a witch’s gold. But is what they find worth the potential reward? Find out in D.L. Winchester’s debut Eye Tale, “Harriet’s Grave.”
Two men climbed over the fence of the small cemetery. Reaching back for their shovels, they moved through the tall grass, past aging and falling tombstones.
“Why didn’t we just go through the gate?” The tall one whispered.
“Same reason we parked on the highway and walked through the woods, you dolt. We don’t want anyone to see us,” the other one whispered. “Now we’re looking for Harriet Greer.”
He nodded, shining his flashlight on a nearby stone. “Spooky, ain’t it.”
“Wait ‘til you see the money. You won’t care about how spooky it is then.”
I knew where they were going: the grave under the old pine tree on the western edge of the cemetery. They walked slowly, not noticing me as I crawled through the grass behind them. In the distance, a coyote howled.
“Jesus!” The tall one shone his light into the woods surrounding the cemetery.
“Will you relax, Jerry? That coyote ain’t nowhere near us.”
“Sorry, Andy. I guess I’m kinda nervous.”
“You idiot.” He took out a pistol and held it up. “Bullet beats animal.”
I stifled a laugh. Guns might protect them from wildlife, but they won’t save them from me.
